In the small airplane of MD-82, there were only 5 passengers. After 2.5 hours’ flight, the airplane arrived at Beijing Capital International Airport at 17:10.

I stayed in the International Club Hotel of St. Regis.

This hotel is located in the embassy area in ChaoYang district of Beijing. Actually, Japanese Embassy is next to this hotel. I love the atmosphere of this area. The street in front of the hotel is very beautiful.

After my registration in the hotel, I went to my favorite seafood restaurant, “Wang-Long-Zhou”, with several people. The restaurant was clouded not only by customers but also by live fishes, shells or others as usual.

I love this restaurant because of taste and atmospheres. The prices here are not expensive . The seats are always occupied by local Beijing people but not by foreign tourists. No employee can speak English. Thus, you might guess that it would be very difficult for me to make adequate order for the menu. However, all of the employees really know what I want, because I come here very often, and foreign visitors are very rare for them, so that they can recognize me very easily.

This time, I visited Beijing to have a lecture in the 3^rd Five-Continent International Symposium on Cardiovascular Diseases. The meeting was held in the Beijing International Convention Center . This scientific meeting includes only lectures and presentations but not live demonstration. Anzhen hospital, which I introduce last time, is organizing this meeting. I presented the lecture entitled “Angioplasty for Chronic Total Occlusion” next to the overall lecture on the treatments for acute coronary syndrome by Dr. Lu . My English presentation was sequentially translated into Chinese by a lady doctor .

After finishing my lecture, we went to Ditan Park. During Qin Dynasty, the Emperor was living within the Forbidden City (green square on the Beijing map), which was the palace and located in the center of Beijing city. The north gate was the most important for the city. They located AnTien gate, which means the gate stabilizing everything, in the north part of the city. Also, they build 4 shrines around the city. They are Ditan (red circle), Tientan (blue circle), Ritan (pink circle) and Yuetan (yellow circle), and located in the north, south, east and west part of the city, respectively. “Di”, “Tien”, “Ri”, “Yue” mean ground, heaven, sun and moon, respectively . Now, Tientan is one of the famous places in Beijing for tourism, but other 3 places are just only parks for local Beijing people. Only the gate of Ditan park is holding the ancient taste of Ditan .

When we visited Ditan park, there was a big open book market . Many local people were visiting there. In the park, there are many beautiful pine trees . Old gentleman and lady were using a big brush to write down Chinese characters on the pavement . The ink that they used was simple water. They were doing this writing not for getting money but just for practice. Their beautiful writings were disappearing spontaneously with drying in a few minutes.

Near the gate of Ditan park, there is Beijing Ditan Hospital, where the patients mainly with infectious diseases are accommodated and many patients with SARS were hospitalized last year .

I returned to Japan by an ANA flight departing at 14:45 that afternoon. Thus, I stayed in Beijing only for < 24 hours again this time.

はじめに

2004年4月16日午前11時10分に第21回小倉ライブデモンストレーションでの私の役割を終えてから、小倉発の新幹線 に乗って福岡国際空港まで急ぎました。

福岡空港は福岡駅から遠くない所にあるので、搭乗予定のMU512便(中国東方航空)出発予定時刻13:40 には十分間に合う12:30には到着しました。それ程急いで空港に行ったにもかかわらず、この便は1時間以上も遅れ、実際には14:50に飛び立ちました。 この便に乗るのはこれで2回目でしたが、前回は何と2時間も遅れたことを思い出しました。飛行機は小さなMD-82でしたが、何と5人しか搭乗者は おりませんでした。福岡より北京は2時間半の飛行時間で、北京首都国際空港に到着したのは午後5時10分でした。

今回、私は国際倶楽部ホテルSt Regisに宿泊しました。このホテルは北京市朝陽区の大使館街に位置しております。 実際、日本国大使館はこのホテルの隣にあります。私はこの地域の雰囲気をとても好きです。ホテル前の道路はとても美しいものです。ホテルに チェック・インした後、友人達と共に大好きな海鮮酒家、万龍洲に行きました。毎度の如く、万龍洲はお客さんとたくさんの生きた魚や貝などで 込み合っていました。私はこの店の味と雰囲気が大好きです。席は何時も、外国人観光客でなく、地元北京の人々で込み合っています。 店員は誰一人英語を話しません。ですから、メニューを注文する時にうまくいくかどうか心配されるでしょう。しかし、私はこの店をめずらしい外国人の お得意様なので、店員誰しも僕のこと知っていますので、僕が何を欲しいかがすぐ分かるので困りません。

今回、私は第三回心臓病五大陸国際シンポジウムでの講演のために北京を訪れました。この会議は 北京国際会議場で行われました。会議は講義と発表のみでライブデモンストレーションはありません。私は、呂先生(安貞医院)による 「急性冠症候群に対する治療のまとめ」という講義の次に、「慢性完全閉塞に対する経皮的冠動脈インターベンション」というタイトルの講義を 行いました。私が英語で講義し、それを女性医師が中国語に逐次通訳しました。

講義を終えた後、私たちは地壇公園に行きました。清朝の時代、皇帝は北京の中心部に位置する紫禁城に 住んでいました。北京の北の門は最も重要な門であり、全てを安定させる、ということから名づけられた安定門がありました。市の周囲には 4箇所の祭壇が設けられ、地、天、日、月の文字が用いられ、北、南、東そして西の位置に地壇、天壇、日壇、月壇が作られました。 現在では、天壇は観光スポットとしても有名ですが、他の3箇所は北京市民のための公園として残るのみです。地壇公園入り口の門が 当時を偲ばせるのみです。

私たちが地壇公園を訪れた日には、丁度大きな野外書籍市が行われていました。このため、多くの地元の 人々が訪れていました。石の歩道で、水を使って綺麗な書の練習をしている老人たちがいました。別に、これを見世物にお金をめぐんでもらうのではなく、 単に書の練習をしているのでした。単なる水ですから、書くはしから乾燥して消えていきます。

地壇公園入り口近くにはあの地壇病院があります。この感染症専門病院には去年のSARS騒ぎの時に、 たくさんのSARS患者が収容されて治療されました。

この日の午後、私は14:45発のANA便で日本に帰りました。そのような訳で、今回も24時間北京に滞在しませんでした。

今回仕入れた北京ミニ知識: 現在の北京でのガソリン価格はリッター3.7元だそうです。現在1元は大体日本円14円ぐらいです。
