Annual Scientific Session of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) 2005

I flied from Narita International Airport by JL 010 flight departing at 11:45 AM on May 04 Wednesday, 2005 for Chicago, USA. After 11 and 30 minutes’ flight, I arrived in Chicago O’Hare International Airport and waited for almost 2 hours for the UA 5542 flight to Jacksonville, Florida. The small airplane to Jacksonville was completely full. I arrive at the final destination Jacksonville Airport around 14:30 on May 04. After 45 minutes’ driving by taxi, I arrived at the hotel “Sawgrass Marriott Resort & Spa Hotel” in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

I did not know the name of Ponte Vedra Beach, since I do not play golf. However, if you are interested in playing golf, you may know the name. People say that the name is famous among golf players, because one of the games of PGA Tour Tournament is held in the golf course there.

The hotel is a kind of resort hotels. The hotel garden is beautiful.

I am the member of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) for many years more than 10 years (FSCAI). This society is a very historical scientific society among the physicians doing coronary angiography, because it was first established by Mason Sones, who invented the selective coronary angiography in 1955.

Convention Center

After publishing several articles on the official journal of SCAI “Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions (CCI)”, I was elected as an official member of SCAI, namely the Fellow of SCAI (FSCAI). I am also only 1 Japanese member of the Editorial Boards for CCI Journal for these 5 years. The annual meeting of SCAI is always not big. Total number of attendants is always less than 500 people. However, it is normally held in the hotels located at nice places. This was my 3rd participation in the annual meeting of SCAI. Recently, SCAI is trying to involve many local scientific societies from the abroad such as the Japanese Society of Interventional Cardiology (JSIC), the Asian-Pacific Society of Interventional Cardiology (APSIC), Italian Society of Interventional Cardiology (GISE), and the Society of Latin American Interventional Cardiology (SOLACI). Dr. Hideo Tamai and I were invited by SCAI as the President and vice President of JSIC, respectively.

May 5 Thursday, 2005

The SCAI meeting was held in the convention center of Sawgrass Marriott Hotel. SCAI organizing committee arranged the specific session for JSIC. It was planned between 10:30 AM and noon. Dr. Tamai made a lecture on PCI for CTO lesions, and I did on Transradial Coronary Intervention. After this session, I was free and had nothing to do. Then, I did my own work in the hotel room.

May 6 Friday, 2005

There was a session discussing about the vascular access between 10:30 AM and 12:00 noon. My role there was again the lecture about TRI. The session was held in a relatively small room, but we had heated discussion.

In contrast, the area of the poster session was not crowded. After finishing these roles, I went to a Thai Restaurant to have lunch. I was surprised to see a photogram of the Sitting Great Buddha in my city KAMAKURA. I flied back to Japan next morning.

The Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI) 2005年 学術集会

成田国際空港から2005年5月4日11:45 AM水曜日発シカゴ行きJL 010 に乗り アメリカに向かいました。11時間半の飛行の後、シカゴ・オヘア国際空港に到着しま した。そして、2時間待ちの後で、 UA 5542に乗ってフロリダ州ジャクソンビル空港 に向かいました。空港に着いたのは同日午後2時30分になっていました。そして45 分間タクシーに乗り、SCAI会場でもあるホテル「Sawgrass Marriott Resort & Spa Hotel in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida」に到着しました。

私はゴルフをしないので、 Ponte Vedra Beachという名前を知りませんでしたが、 何でもPGAツアーのゴルフ・コースとして有名な場所だそうです。

ホテルはいわゆるリゾート・ホテルであり、庭もとても美しいものでした。

私は、もう10年間以上もthe Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI)の正規会員(FSCAI)です。この学会はとても歴史のある学会で、 あの1955年に始めて選択的冠状動脈造影を行ったMason Sonesによって設立された そうです。

私はいくつかの論文がSCAIの機関誌でもある“Catheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions (CCI)”に掲載されたのをきっかけに、正規メンバーであ るFSCAIとなりました。また、この5年間はそのCCI誌における唯一の日本人編集委 員でもあります。SCAIの年次学術集会はそんなに大きなものではなく、せいぜい500 人ぐらいしか集まりません。でも、いつもとても良い場所で開催されます。今回の参加 は、私にとって3回目の参加です。 最近SCAIは学会の規模を大きくするために、全 世界の学会を集めることを始めました。それらの学会としては、the Japanese Society of Interventional Cardiology (日本心血管インターベンション学会: JSIC), the Asian-Pacific Society of Interventional Cardiology (APSIC), Italian Society of Interventional Cardiology (GISE), そして the Society of Latin American Interventional Cardiology (SOLACI)が挙げられます。 今回、玉井秀男先生は、JSIC 理事長として、私は副理事長として招聘されました。

SCAI学会はSawgrass Marriott Hotelの学会場で開催されました。 SCAI 学会委 員会はJSICのために10:30 AMから昼まで一つのセッションをプログラムしました。 玉井先生は慢性完全閉塞に対するPCIについて、私は経橈骨動脈的冠動脈インターベ ンションについて講演を行いました。このセッションが終わってからは何もすることが 無かったので、部屋で自分の仕事をしました。

10:30 AMから昼まで、動脈穿刺部位に関するセッションがあり、そこでも経橈骨 動脈的冠動脈インターベンションに対する講義を行いました。このセッションは小さな 部屋で行われましたが、活発な議論がありました。

これに反して、ポスター会場は寂しかったです。役目を終えてから、タイ料理の店 に昼食を摂りに行きましたが、そこには鎌倉大仏の写真があり、とても驚きました。翌 朝、日本に戻りました。
