Cold and Rainy Istanbul

I have been in Istanbul almost 15 years ago with Dr. Nobuyoshi and Dr. Mitsudo. This time, I visited Istanbul again to participate in the 6th International Congress on Coronary Artery Disease (ICCAD), for which I am one of the 3 International Faculty members from Japan for 8 years, among which I am the Japanese doctor working in clinical Interventional Cardiology. This meeting has been held every 2 years in nice European cities. The Congress Chairman is Dr. Basil S. Lewis from Israel.

There are 3 direct flights a week between Tokyo and Istanbul, which are run by the joint service between Japan and Turkish Airlines. I took JL 5091 flight departing at 14:25 on October 30 Sunday from Narita International Airport. After flying for 12 hours and 30 minutes, I reached Istanbul Ataturk International Airport. It was already 20:00 on the same day. I was surprised to hear the in-flight announcement telling “According to the weather forecast, it will be rainy and the temperature will be 15 degree Celsius in Istanbul.” I wrongly expected that it would be warm or hot in Istanbul without any scientific information, and I did not prepare anything for cold weather. Actually, I prepared short pants and short-sleeved shirts. I checked-in Conrad Istanbul Hotel later than 9:00 PM, where the Congress was held.

Istanbul is the biggest city in Turkey and located crossing the border between Asia and Europe, which is separated by the Strait of Bosphorus. The population of Istanbul is 14 million, and that of whole Turkey is 65 million. This strait is connecting the Black Sea and the Sea of Marmara. Since Istanbul has been one of the most important cities in terms of the military strategy, there have been so many battles between Islamic Turkey and Christian Crusader. Because of this long history, there are much ancient beautiful structures. The old city used to be surrounded by City Wall. Two suspension bridges are arching the Strait of Bosphorus. One of them is the Bosphorus Bridge and constructed by the Joint Construction between Japanese and Turkish Governments.

October 31 Monday, 2005

I had no duty during the day. Although it was heavily raining and cold outside and I did not protect myself for cold weather, I encouraged myself to go to sightseeing. I first went to the old city area by car. There is a famous Islamic Mosque “Hagia Sophia”, which was originally constructed by Christian people as a church and changed to Islamic Mosque later by Moslem people. Next, I went to so called Blue Mosque (Suleymaniye Mosque). There was a long queue waiting for the entrance. We have to take of our shoes in the Mosque. In Turkey, people always take off their shoes in their private houses as in Japan. The floor of the inside of the Mosque is covered by Carpets. It was beautiful. Next to this Mosque, I went to the famous Topkapi Palace, where many treasures are still kept. The gate of the Palace is protected by the Military Soldiers. Since it was still raining and cold outside, I wanted to have rest in the warm place. I went to a seafood restaurant, where I could choose fresh fishes. Following the lunch, I quickly visited the world-oldest market “Grand Bazar”. In Grand Bazar, there are more than 3,500 shops, which are selling various products. We can see many jewel or noble metal shops. I came back to the hotel around 2:30 PM and had sleep.

SUSHI and Japanese Foods in Istanbul

This time, I have been to 2 types of Japanese Restaurants to have dinner. The 1st one was “YUTAKA” Japanese Restaurant, which is located next to Hyatt Hotel Istanbul, and the 2nd one was a Revolving SUSHI restaurant in Divan Hotel. The price of 1 dish was from 3.75 to 9.75 YTL. YTL means New Turkish Liras and is almost equivalent to 80 Japanese Yen (0.7 US dollars). The SUSHI counter was crowded with Turkish people and one of the chefs was a Japanese man. Taste in these Japanese Restaurants was not bad but far from that in the Japanese high-class Restaurant.

November 01 Tuesday, 2005

I waked up early at 4:00 AM to prepare for my lecture. The assigned title for my lecture was “PCI for CTO lesions using conventional guidewire techniques”. After preparing everything, I put all of the presentation data into a USB memory stick by using the “presentation pack” command of PowerPoint. I went down to the 2nd floor and Speaker-Ready Room, where I transferred my presentation data into a presentation server machine. While I was waiting for my presentation in the hall A, Dr. Sunao NAKAMURA came to me. We talked each other.

One of the 2 chairpersons for my session was so great Dr. J. Eduardo Sousa, who is the 1st doctor to use CYPHER stent for the actual human patient in San Paulo, Brazil. These patients’ subset, which underwent the 1st implantation of CYPHER stents, is now called FIM (First-In-Man). It was a real great honor to have a chance to present my data in front of so famous doctor as Dr. Sousa. I did my presentation at a burst in 20 minutes. I had several questions from the audience and answered to them. After finishing my presentation, the Congress Chairman Dr. Basil S. Lewis came to me and told “Your lecture was so wonderful. Congratulation!”

I hurried back to my room after my presentation and packed the luggage. After having lunch in a seafood restaurant near by the Strait of Bosphorus, I moved to the Istanbul International Airport and took a 4-hours’ flight by British Airways BA 677 to London Heathrow Airport departing at 16:35, where I was transferred to a JL 404 flight to Tokyo. After 12 hours’ flight from London, I finally reached Narita International Airport around 6:00 PM on November 02 Wednesday, 2005.

トルコ訪問記 I

寒くて雨のイスタンブール

15年前に延吉正清先生や光藤先生と一緒にイスタンブールに行ったことがあります。今回 は、第6回ICCADという学会に参加するために訪れました。私は過去8年間に渡って、この学 会の日本から選ばれている3名の役員の中の唯一のInterventional Cardiologistです。この学 会は2年ごとにヨーロッパの綺麗な街で開催されます。学会の理事長はイスラエルのLewis先 生です。

東京-イスタンブール間には週3便の直行便が飛んでいます。私は、成田空港より10月30 日日曜日の14:25発JL 5091便に乗りました。この便は日本航空とトルコ航空の共同運航便で す。12時間30分の飛行の後でイスタンブール国際空港に到着しました。時刻は同じ日の夜8 時でした。機内アナウンスで、「イスタンブールは雨で気温15度です」と、言われた時には、 驚いてしまいました。私は、勝手に暖かい、と思い込んでいて、何しろ短パンと半袖の準備をし、 何も防寒具は持ち合わせていませんでした。学会場でもあるコンラッド・ホテルにチェック・イ ンしたのは夜9時頃でした。

イスタンブールはトルコ最大の街で、人口はトルコ全体の6,500万人に対して、1,400万人 です。ボスフォラス海峡がアジアとヨーロッパを分けているまさしくその場所に位置します。イ スタンブールは戦略上非常に重要な街の一つでしたので、歴史上イスラム教トルコとキリスト教 十字軍との間で数多くの戦いが繰り広げられてきました。旧市街はかつて城壁で囲われていまし た。二つの釣り橋がボスフォラス海峡に架かっていますが、その中の一つでいるボスフォラス大 橋は日本とトルコ両政府共同事業で架橋されました。

この日は何の役目もありませんでした。外は雨で寒かったし、何の防寒着も準備していま せんでしたが、勇気を奮って観光に行くことにしました。最初に車で旧市街に行きました。そこ には有名なHagia Sophiaという建物がありますが、これは最初にキリスト教徒によって教会と して建造され、後にイスラム教徒によってモスクに改造された建物です。次に、青のモスクと呼 ばれるSuleymaniye Mosqueに行きました。入り口では長い行列が出来ていました。モスクに 入るには靴を脱がねばなりません。何でもトルコでは自宅でも日本のように靴を脱ぐのだそうで す。モスクの内側の床は絨毯で覆われています。とても綺麗です。このモスクの次に、有名なト プカピ宮殿に行きました。ここにはたくさんの宝物が保管されています。宮殿の入り口はトルコ 軍の兵士によって護衛されています。外はまだ寒く雨が降り続いていましたので、暖かい場所で 休みたい、と思いました。シーフード・レストランに行き、新鮮な魚を選びました。昼ごはんを 終えてから、世界で最も古いマーケットである「グラン・バザール」に行きました。ここには 3,500の店があり、色々な物を売っています。宝石や貴金属もたくさんあります。午後2:30頃 にはホテルに戻り眠りました。

イスタンブールの寿司と和食

今回は2ヶ所の和食レストランで夕食をとりました。最初は「豊　ゆたか」です。これはハ イアット・ホテルの隣にあります。次の店は、ディヴァン・ホテルの中にある回転寿司の店でし た。回転寿司一皿の値段は大体日本円にして、300円から800円くらいでした。この店は取る この人々で一杯でしたが、握っていた内の一人は日本人でした。これらの和食の店での味はまあ まあですが、やはり日本の良い店に比較すると相当な差がありました。

朝の4時に起きて講演の準備をしました。私に与えられたタイトルは、「従来のテクニック を用いた慢性完全閉塞病変に対する経皮的冠動脈インターベンション」でした。準備し終えてか ら、PowerPointのプレゼンテーション・パックを用いて発表内容をUSBメモリー・スティク に移しました。そして、2階の発表者控え室に行き、発表用サーバーにデータを移しました。私 がホールAで発表の順番を待っている時に、中村　淳先生が来られ色々と話をしました。

私の発表の時の座長二人の内の一人はあの偉大なDr. J. Eduardo Sousaです。もちろん、 ブラジル・サンパウロにおいて世界で初めてCYPHERステントを患者さんに植え込んだ先生で す。この時の患者さん達に対するCYPHERステントの臨床研究は初めて人類で行われた、とい うことでFIMと呼ばれています。彼の前で発表するというのは大変な栄誉でした。一気に20 分間の講演を終えました。聴衆から質問があり、回答しました。発表を終えると、学会理事長の Lewis先生が寄って来られ、「とてもすばらしい講演だった」と、誉めて下さいました。

部屋に急いで戻り、荷物を詰めました。ボスフォラス海峡沿いのシーフード・レストランで 昼食を摂ってから、イスタンブール空港に向かいました。そして、ロンドン・ヒースロー空港行 き16:35発の英国航空BA 677便にのり、4時間の飛行の後、ヒースローで日本航空JL 404便 に乗り換えて更に12時間の飛行の後にようやく成田空港に到着したのは、2005年11月02日 水曜日の夜6時でした。
