Rainy Belgrade

This was my 3rd trip to Serbia and Montenegro. I joined the meeting named “the International Workshop II: Complex Angioplasty up to Chronic Total Occlusions 2006: Clinically Integrated Approach”, which was held in Belgrade between April 12 and 14, 2006. I was one of the Course Director of the meeting with Professor Dr. Miodrag C. Ostojic at Clincal Center of Serbia of University of Belgrade. Flying by JL 407 flight departing at 13:00 on April 11 Tuesday 2006, I left for Frankfurt from Narita Airport. After 3 hours’ transit time at Frankfurt Airport, I changed my flight to LH 3408. Finally, I arrived at Belgrade International Airport later than 11:00 PM on the same day. Professor Ge Junbo of ZhonShang University Hospital in Shanghai took the same flight to join the meeting.

At the immigration gate, Assistant Professor Dr. Milan A. Nedejikovic was waiting for our arrival. This time, I checked in one of the Hotel M Best Western, which was renovated recently. From my room, I could use the high-speed Internet connection freely. Since the meeting was scheduled to start at 7:30 AM next morning, I went to bed quickly.

April 12 Wednesday 2006

The meeting was held in the auditorium of the same hotel. There were almost 100 attendants coming from several countries. The opening ceremony was commenced by the introductory speech by Dr. Ostojic. I sat in front with him, Prince Alexander, Princess Katherine and Dr. Antonio Colombo. He sincerely expressed his great appreciation to me for my several years’ contribution in PCI in this country. Next to him, I, Dr. Colombo and Prince delivered speech. This year, Dr. Ge Junbo from Shanghai, China, Dr. Samuel Mathew from Chennai, India, Dr. Antonio Colombo from Milan, Italy, Dr. Carlo DiMario from London, UK, Dr. Shinji Tanaka from Atsugi, Japan and Dr. Alexander Doganov from Sophia, Bulgaria also attended the meeting as the faculty members.

After the opening speech, we moved to Clinical Center of Serbia to do PCI live demonstration. Two patients with CTO lesions were assigned to me on the day. After doing cases, I received TV and Newspaper interviews. The major difference from the last year meeting was that they prepared enough materials. It was very hard to me in the last year that they did have few guiding catheters, small-size balloons or guidewires. However, I could use several different choices of guiding catheter, 1.5-mm balloons, Transit microcatheters, Miracle guidewires as well as different choices of drug-eluting stents freely.

All of the faculty members were invited to reception dinner at the Palace. Serbia has a long history of Kingdom. During the rule by the communistic party, Kings’ family sought refuge in England. Prince Alexander and Princess Katherine were born and grown up in London, and came back to Belgrade several years back. Because the Constitution of Serbia and Montenegro still has not yet approved the presence of King, they established the foundation. They are now living in the Palace, where are protected by the Army. Many general people in Serbia admire Prince and Princess. The Palace was so gorgeous. I sat next to Princess Katherine. The dinner was fantastic. We enjoyed dinner and drinking by late night there.

April 13 Thursday 2006

Four cases were assigned to me next day. One of those cases was impressive. The patient had a CTO lesion in the proximal LAD. The lesion was very hard. Even by using a Conquest-Pro 12 with a Transit microcatheter, it was very hard to penetrate. However, finally I succeeded. I used a Tornus device. Everybody was very happy for the result. Dr. Milan told me “You are a genius.” During my visit, I did 6 cases in total. The target lesions of these 6 patients were all CTO lesions. I am very happy for the overall results. There were many young fellows watching our procedures in the control room which was sandwiched by 2 catheter laboratories. One of these fellows was a typical Serbian beauty. This time, I visited Belgrade with Dr. Shinji Tanaka. It was unlucky for him that it was continuously heavily raining and that we had no time to take even short sightseeing. The rain was so heavy that the river Sava had overflowed. We had a dinner with Dr. Goran Milasinovic, and Dr. Milan in a nice restaurant.

April 14 Friday 2006

The Hotel “M” is located on the hill above the downtown Belgrade and surrounded with the forest. Since we had time in the morning before our leaving from the hotel around 11:00 AM, and the day had cleared up, we had waling through the beautiful forest. There was a big Military hospital behind the forest. We took Air France AF 2787 flight to Paris departing at 12:40. From the window of the aircraft, I could see the Belgrade International Airport clearly. After 2 hours’ transit time, I took JL 416 flight to Tokyo. The arrival at Narita Airport was 12:30 on April 15 Saturday 2006.

Although the travel to Serbia is always tough for me because of severe jet lag and heavy PCI cases, I am sure that I will be back again next year. I would like to keep watching how this country would develop and to promote the friendship more and more between Japan and Serbia.

セルビア・モンテネグロ訪問記 - III

雨のベオグラード

今回は3回目のセルビア・モンテネグロ訪問です。2006年4月12日から14日まで首 都ベオグラードで開催された第2回国際ワークショップ:慢性完全閉塞病変を含めた高難度 PCIという会に出席するためです。私は、ベオグラード大学教授のOstojic教授と共に、こ の会の会長でした。4月11日火曜日13:00発のJL 407便に乗り、成田からフランクフル トに飛びました。そこで3時間ぐらいのトランジットの後、LH 3408便でベオグラードに 向かい、到着したのは夜の11時を回っていました。上海中山大学のGe Junbo教授も同じ 便でした。

到着ゲートでは助教授のMilan先生が待っていました。今年はホテルMというホテル に宿泊しましたが、このホテルは最近改装され、部屋からは自由にインターネット高速回 線に接続できました。翌朝は7:30 AMから会が開催されるため、そのまま寝床に着きまし た。

会はホテルの講堂で行われました。色々な国々から100名ぐらいの参加者がありました。 Ostojic先生の開会の挨拶で始まりました。私、Alexander皇太子、Katherine皇太后、 Colombo先生、そしてOstojic先生が前に座りました。Ostojic先生は私がこれまで数年間 に渡り行ってきたこの国のPCIに対する貢献に感謝の意を示しました。彼の挨拶に続いて、 私、Colombo先生そしてAlexander皇太子が挨拶をしました。今年は、上海からGe Junbo 先生、インドからSamuel Mathew先生、ミラノからAntonio Colombo先生、ロンドンか らCarlo DiMario先生、日本から田中慎司先生そしてブルガリアからAlexandor Doganov 先生がファカルティーとして参加されました。

開会挨拶が終わってから私達はPCIライブデモンストレーションを行うために Clinical Center of Serbiaに移動しました。その日は2例の慢性完全閉塞症例が私に割り当 てられていました。これを終えるとテレビや新聞のインタビューがありました。前年との 大きな違いは、今回は、ガイディング・カテーテル、1.5mmバルーン、Miracleガイドワ イヤー等が十分にあり、また薬剤溶出性ステントも色々な種類がありました。

その夜、ファカルティーの面々は王宮での晩餐会に呼ばれました。セルビアは長い間王 制でした。共産党政権の時代には王家の人々はイギリスに亡命していました。Alexander 皇太子、Katherine皇太后はロンドンで生まれ育ち、数年前にベオグラードに戻りました。 セルビア・モンテネグロ憲法では未だに王の存在を認めていないため、彼らは財団を作り ました。今は軍が管理する王宮に住んでいます。セルビアの人々は皇太子・皇太后を尊敬 しています。王宮はとても豪華でした。私は、Katherine皇太后の隣に座りました。晩餐は すばらしいものでした。夜遅くまで皆で食事と飲み物を楽しみました。

翌日は4例が私に与えられました。この中の一例は印象に残りました。左冠動脈前下行 枝近位部慢性完全閉塞の男性患者さんでした。病変はとても硬く、Transitを用いて Conquest-Pro 12を用いてもなかなか通過できませんでした。しかし、最後には病変を通過 し、トルナスを用いました。皆結果に満足しました。Milan先生は、「あなたは天才だ」と 言われました。今回の訪問中、私は全部で6例の症例を行いました。この6例で病変は全 て慢性完全閉塞でした。全体の結果には満足です。2つのカテ室に挟まれて操作室がありま すが、そこにはたくさんの研修医が見学していました。その中に一人典型的セルビア美人 がいました。今回、私は田中慎司先生とベオグラードに来ましたが、残念なことにずっと ひどい雨でしたし、ちょっとでも観光に行く時間はありませんでした。雨はひどくて、サ バ河が氾濫していました。この夜はMiral先生、Goran先生ととても良いレストランで夕 食を摂りました。

ホテルMはベオグラード中心街上の丘にあり、森に囲まれています。ホテルを出発す る11:00 AM頃までに時間があったし、天気は晴れ上がっていたので、その森を散策するこ とにしました。森を抜けると大きな軍病院がありました。12:40発のエール・フランスAF 2787便に乗りパリに向かい、そこで2時間のトランジットの後、JL 416便で日本に帰りま した。成田に着いたのは2006年4月15日土曜日12:30頃でした。

セルビアへの旅は何時もひどい時差ぼけと、たくさんの難しいPCI症例のため、とて も私には辛いものです。しかし、きっと来年も訪れることでしょう。この国がどのように 発展していくかを見続けたいし、また日本との友好関係をもっと発展させたいと思ってい ます。
