Returning to Xi’an after 5 years’ interval

Xi’an used to be the Capital of China for more than 4,000 years. Its ancient name was ChangAn. I have been there many times since my first visit in 1992. However, recent my visits in China have not involved this beautiful city for 5 years. My last visit there was November 2nd in 2001.

Since my first visit in China in 1991, all of the cities in China have shown remarkable changes to me along with surprising advancement in economy. Xi’an is of course no exceptional from these changes. I first flew to Beijing by JL 781 flight on September 8th Friday 2006 and then changed my flight to CA 1255 to XianYang International Airport at Xi’an. The arrival time was past 17:00 on the same day. This airport had a new terminal building, which I have not ever seen. From the airport, I directly moved to Tang Dynasty Theater House, where a welcome party was held by Xijing Hospital.

After spending short time there, I moved to a Dumpling Restaurant with Professor Jia GuoRen, who is a good friend of mine and used to be the Professor in Xijing Hospital. He is the 1st doctor who had performed the 1st case of PCI in China in 1983. The name of the restaurant was DaQinHua. There were many kinds of dumpling. Taste was fantastic. After having dumplings, I came back to our hotel, where I met Dr. John Coppola and Dr. Tak Kwan from New York, and Dr. Tse Tak Sun from Hong Kong.

Xijing Hospital is affiliated to the 4th Military Medical University in Xi’an. It is a huge hospital. I have been to this hospital many times since 1992. X-ray machines were very old during my first several visits. However, the best and most advanced X-ray machines are installed now. I was so surprised that I could not see any buildings, which were familiar with me. Almost all of the buildings were scraped and rebuilt. Outpatient building is huge. New patients’ ward is so modern and beautiful. Why I returned to Xi’an? It was because I joined the Xijing International Transradial Coronary Intervention Live Demonstration Course as one of the Course Directors with Professor Wang HaiChang from Xijing Hospital and Dr. John T. Coppola from St Vincent’s Catholic Medical Center, New York.

Following the opening ceremony, I delivered an opening lecture. After my lecture, I moved to the catheter laboratories, where the newest GE flat panel machines were installed. I performed several cases through TRI from morning to evening. I was very surprised to know that all of the physicians in Xijing Hospital have already achieved high levels in their skill for PCI. I am afraid that I might have nothing to teach to them. So many years have passed, and things are changing.

Dr. Liu (the name might be not correct) is a beautiful lady doctor. Last year, she spent 1 year for study in Osaka University Medical School. She is very able. She can speak very fluent Japanese as well as English. While she was studying in Osaka University, she had published 1 research article in Circulation. It is quite amazing.

After finishing the meeting, we visited the DaQinHua Dumpling Restaurant again.

August 10th Sunday 2006

There are several direct flights between Tokyo and Xi’an in a week. Since my returning departure time was 15:05 from Xi’an, I had enough time in the morning. Xi’an is a city surrounded by a fortress, which is still well preserved. The total distance of this fortress is 13.7 Km and the height is about 20 meters. There are rental bicycles on the fortress. It has been one of my dreams to experience the fortress completely from the beginning to the end since my first visit to Xi’an. It was the time to do. I rent a bicycle. It was Giant’s bicycle.

Since the top of the fortress is paved with stones, it was hard to ride on a bicycle. Anyway, we enjoyed the bicycle riding. From the fortress, I could see the Xi’an Station and other landmarks. It was really good exercise for me, my physics and my heart. When returning to the hotel, Dr. Wang Qion was waiting for me. We again visited the same dumpling restaurant. So many years have passed. Flying by JL 600 flight from Xi’an, I returned to Tokyo around 8:30 PM on September 10th Sunday 2006.

5年ぶりの西安

西安は4,000年間以上も中国の首都であり、長安と呼ばれていました。始めて1992年に訪 れて以来何回も西安には来たことがあります。しかし、最近5年間はこの都市に来ていません でした。この前来たのは2001年11月02日のことでした。

1991年に始めて中国に来て以来、中国の全ての都市は経済発展と共に、大きく変化してき ました。西安とて例外ではありません。まず、2006年9月8日金曜日発のJL 781便で北京に 入り、そこでCA 1255便に乗り換えて西安空港に到着したのは17:00を回っていました。空港 ターミナルは私が始めて目にする新しいものでした。空港から唐楽宮という劇場レストランに向 いました。そこでは西京病院主催の歓迎会が開かれていました。

この劇場は早々に、買国民　先生と一緒に餃子屋さんに向いました。買先生は西京病院の教 授でした。また、1983年に中国で最初のPCIを行った方としても有名です。今回の餃子屋さん は大清花という名前のところでした。たくさんの種類の餃子があり、味も最高でした。この後、 ホテルに戻ったのですが、そこでCoppola先生、Tak先生そして香港のTak先生とお会いしま した。

西京病院は西安の第四軍医大学付属病院です。巨大に病院です。1992年に最初に訪問して から何回もこの病院には来たことがあります。最初の内はレントゲン機械がものすごく古いもの でしたが、最近は最先端のレントゲン機械が導入されています。今回訪れたとき、何もかも変っ てしまって驚きました。ほとんどのビルが壊され、立て直されていました。外来棟は巨大で、入 院病棟はモダンで綺麗でした。今回何故西安を訪れたのでしょう。それは、この西京病院で、西 京国際経橈骨動脈冠動脈インターベンションライブデモンストレーション・コースが行われ、私 は、西京病院　王海昌　教授、Coppola先生と共にコース・ディレクターだったからです。

開会式典に続いて、私の開会講演があり、それからカテ室に移動しました。そして、そこで 朝から夕方まで過ごしました。機械はGEの最新型のフラット・パネルが何台かありました。西 京病院のお医者さん達のPCI技術レベルの高さに驚きました。もう私から教えるものなんか何 も無い。本当にもう何年も経ったのですね。全て変ってしまいました。

Liu先生(正確には名前を把握していません)は美人の女医さんです。昨年彼女は一年間大阪 大学医学部に留学しました。彼女はとても有能です。日本語も英語も流暢に話すことができます。 大阪大学留学中に彼女はCirculationに一編の研究論文を通しました。驚くべき才能です。

会を終えてから皆で、また同じ餃子屋さんに行きました。

東京と西安の間には週数便の直行便があります。帰国の便は15:05発でしたので、十分な 時間がありました。西安は城壁で取り囲まれた城塞都市ですが、その城壁は未だ良く残っていま す。この城壁の総延長は13.7 Kmあり、高さは20 m以上です。最初に西安を訪れた時から、 何時かこの城壁を全て巡りたい、と思っていました。今回がそのチャンスでした。城壁の上には レンタ・サイクルがあります。それを借りました。自転車はGiantsのものでした。

城壁の上は石畳なので、自転車乗るのは大変でした。でもとても楽しみました。城壁の上か ら西安駅や色々な建物を見ることができました。本当に私にとって、私の肉体にとって、そして 心にとってとても良い経験でした。ホテルに戻るとWang Qion先生が待っていました。昼食は また同じ餃子屋さんに行きました。本当に何年も経ちました。西安発のJL 600便で東京に戻り、 着いたのは同日8:30 PM頃でした。
