Dr. Otsubo kindly arranged a sightseeing trip to Iguazu Fall. We flew to the city near Iguazu Fall, Faz do Iguazu. Since it was very late when we reached the hotel, we went to bed immediately.

Next morning, we visited Iguazu Fall Visitors’ Center. This area is one of the world heritages and strictly protected by Brazilian Government. There were several rare species living. Iguazu means “Big Water” in native Brazilian language. It was huge and overwhelming. We took a boat and crossed under the fall.

|
After finishing the Iguazu tour, we returned to Sao Paulo and had dinner at SUSHI “DOITSU” near our hotel “Mercure Grand Sao Paulo”, which was run by a German manager. The taste was so-so. Sao Paulo is a big city.

Sao Paulo is a leading city in the world for the development of Interventional Cardiology. The 1st human patient implantations of Palmaz-Schatz stent as well as CYPHER were performed in Instituto Dante Pazzanese de Cardiologia (Dante Pazzanese Institute of Cardiology). I visited that famous hospital and demonstrated 5 cases of TRI there. Dr. Fausto welcomed me. It was great and emotional for me to have a chance to demonstrate my PCI technique, especially TRI, in this great hospital. One of the patients was a patient for “First-in-Man” trial for some drug-eluting stent.

Young physicians there ware very eager to learn TRI. One sister could speak Japanese fluently.

I flew to Brasilia in the morning. I was invited as one of the international faculty
members for the 24th SBHCI (the Brazilian Society of Hemodynamic and Interventional Cardiology), which was held in International Convention Center at Brasilia. Professor Luiz Alberto Mattos was the President of the Brazilian Society of Interventional Cardiology. My hotel “Blue Tree Towers Paulista” was just next to the Convention Center. After finishing my lecture on TRI, I had lunch at Japanese Restaurant “Nippon”. We had dinner at a Brazilian Restaurant with Brazilian doctors.

Brasilia is the Capital of Brazil, and was created artificially in the field. The lake Paranoa was also artificially created. There are many Government buildings in the City.

I had a duty as a discussant for live case transmission and lecture for CTO technique in the morning. After finishing the lecture, I had short city tour and lunch at a very nice Italian Restaurant. Then, I flew back to Sao Paulo.

After coming back to Sao Paulo, I had dinner at Sushi Restaurant “Shin Sushi” with Dr. Ikeno. The food was nice. However, I was surprised. When the other Japanese customers were going out from the entrance after fishing dinner, the Sushi chef told them, “Stop! Don’t go out, Please, wait for the car coming in the restaurant. Outside is dangerous.” Sao Paulo is dangerous at night.

The hotel served Japanese breakfast as well as cheese bread, which is typical breakfast food in Brazil. I visited Santa Cruz Hospital with Dr. Ikeno to discuss about the memorable activities during the Japan and Brazil Anniversary, which will be held in 2008. After the visit, we had short trip to the port Santos, which is 100 Km east from Sao Paulo. The 1st Japanese immigrants to Brazil reached Santos on June 18 in 1908, on the day 100 years which I could do demonstration on TRI in Dante Pazzanese Hospital. It was really impressive. In Santos, we had late lunch.

I flew back by JAL departing at 22:55 via New York and returned to Japan at 13:00 on June 23 Saturday 2007 after long flights.

湘南鎌倉総合病院 心臓センター循環器科

ニューヨークからサンパウロへ
ニューヨーク・マウント・サイナイ病院訪問の後、2007年6月16日土曜日9:25 AM発の TAM航空機でJFK国際空港からサンパウロに飛びました。サンパウロ空港には21:00頃に着 きましたが、Otsubo先生が待っていて下さいました。彼は、日系2.5世のインターベンション の医師です。1998年には一ヶ月間湘南鎌倉総合病院に見学に滞在され、1999年には彼のSanta Cruz病院でTRIのライブデモンストレーションを行いました。最後に彼と会ってから既に8年 間が経過していました。

Otsubo先生は私のためにイグアスの滝観光を企画して下さいました。イグアスの滝近くの 都市、Faz do Iguazuに飛び、ホテルに入りましたが、もう深夜でしたので、そのまま寝ました。

翌朝まず、Visitors’ Centerに行きました。この地域は世界遺産の一つであり、ブラジル政 府により厳重に保護されています。稀有種も多く生育しています。イグアスというのは現地の言 葉で「大きな水」という意味だそうです。滝は荘厳で圧倒されます。ボートで滝くぐりもしまし た。

イグアス滝観光を終えて、サンパウロに戻りました。我々のホテル”Mercure”近くの鮨 ド イツというすし屋さんで食事を取りましたが、ここはドイツの人がやっていました。サンパウロ は大きな都市です。

サンパウロは世界のインターベンションをリードしています。Palmaz-Schatzステントや CYPHERの最初の植え込みはここにある「ダンチ・パツァネーゼ心臓病センター」で行われま した。この日、私はこの有名な病院を訪問し、5例のTRIを披露しました。Fausto先生が私を 迎えて下さいました。この病院で自分のPCIの技術、とりわけTRIを披露することができたの は、とっても印象深いものであり、感激しました。ある新しい薬剤溶出性ステントの最初の植え 込みも行う機会がありました。

若いお医者さんたちは、TRIを学ぼうと熱心でした。看護婦さんの一人は日本語を話せる方 でした。

朝、ブラジリアに飛びました。私は、第24回ブラジルインターベンション学会から招聘さ れていました。Mattos先生が会長の一人です。学会は国際会議場で開催されましたが、ホテル はその隣のホテルでした。まず、TRIに関する講演を行い、その後で日本食の”Nippon”で昼食 を摂りました。夕食はブラジルの先生方と一緒にブラジル料理レストランで摂りました。

ブラジリアはブラジルの首都であり、人工的に造られた都市です。Paranoa湖すら人造湖で す。街には政府関係の建物がたくさんあります。

朝からライブデモンストレーションの解説者と、講演の仕事がありました。講演を終えてか ら、街のちょっとした観光を行い、とても良いイタリア料理レストランで昼食を摂りました。そ して、それからサンパウロに戻りました。

サンパウロに戻ってから、”寿司 新”で夕食を摂ったのですが、一つとても驚くことがあり ました。日本人のお客さんが夕食を終え、外に出ようとすると、ご主人が、「待って、車が来る まで店の中に居て下さい。外に出ると危険です!」と、言ったのです。サンパウロの夜は危険で す。

ホテルでは日本食の朝食が出ました。また、ブラジル定番の朝食である「チーズパン」もあ りました。私は、池野先生と一緒にSanta Cruz病院を訪問し、2008年に開催される日伯友好 100周年記念事業について話し合いました。それから、東に100Km離れた港町サントスに行き ました。日本からの最初の移民が1908年6月18日にこのサントスに着いたのです。丁度それ から99年目の同じ日に、私が日本人として初めてダンチ・パツァネーゼ病院でTRIを披露でき たことは、とっても感慨深いものがあります。サントスでは昼食を摂りました。

この夜の22:55発のJAL便で、ニューヨーク経由で成田に戻りました。成田到着は2007 年6月23日土曜日の13:00でした。
