Joining the ESC meeting as a Faculty member

I left Narita Airport by NH 209 flight departing at 11:35 on September 3 Monday 2007 for Frankfurt Airport. After flying for 12 hours, I changed the flight to the Austrian Airline OS 132 flight and finally reached Vienna around 8:00 PM on the same day.

This was my 2nd trip to Vienna after almost 20 years. I went directly to the best Japanese Restaurant in Vienna “Unkai” and had dinner with Dr. Ikeno. The Japanese food there was incredibly nice.

After finishing the dinner, I checked in my hotel “K+K Hotel Maria Theresia”. I came to Vienna this time to join the ESC (European Congress of Cardiology) meeting. I was invited from the ESC organization committee as one of the invited Faculty members. The invitation as a Faculty to ESC is my greatest honor. ESC is one of the world-biggest medical meetings. The total number of participants exceeds 30,000 people from all around the world.

September 4 Tuesday 2007

I went to “Messe Wien”, where the ESC meeting was held. My role assigned was to chair the session of “How to perform transradial catheterization?” with Dr. Valsecchi from Italy. The speakers were Dr. A. Doganov from Bulgaria and Dr. J. Fajadet from France. Before starting the session from 8:30 AM, I discussed with Drs Doganov and Fajadet how we run the session.

Before starting the session, we did not expect many attendants. However, the truth was different. The big room was almost fully occupied. We spent the wonderful 1 and half hours for the session.

After spending 1 hour for drinking coffee, I went to a Japanese Ramen noodle restaurant “HONOBONO” with Dr. Ikeno to have lunch there. On the way to the restaurant, I could see a famous Ferris Wheel, which was used in the famous movie “The Third Man”. It was still moving. The taste of Miso-Ramen was nice.

Since I had no duty in the afternoon, I decided to have a short sightseeing in this most historical city in Europe. I visited the famous Palace “Schoenbrunn”, which means the beautiful spring.

After coming back to my hotel room and spending several hours, I had dinner at a Vienna food restaurant. In the restaurant, Zither was being played. I enjoyed the famous food “Veal Schnitzel” and “Sachertorte”. Since I was suffering severe jet lag, I came back to my room early.

Next morning I left the hotel at 8:00 AM to take the flight to Paris by OS 711 departing at 10:10 AM from Vienna.

ヨーロッパ心臓病学会からの招聘

2007年9月3日11:35発のフランクフルト行きNH 209便で成田を飛び立ちました。12時 間の飛行の後、オーストリア航空OS 132便に乗り換え、ウィーンに着いたのは同日8:00 PM でした。

ウィーンに来たのは20年ぶり二回目でした。空港からウィーン随一の日本料理店「雲海」 に直行し、そこで池野先生と夕食を摂りました。そこの日本料理は信じられないくらい良質でし た。

夕食を終えてから“K+K Hotel Maria Theresia”というホテルにチェック・インしました。今 回ウィーンに来たのは、ヨーロッパ心臓病学会から役員として招聘されたからです。これとって も名誉なことです。この学会は医学会の中でも特に大きなもので、参加人数は30,000名を越え ます。

会場である「ウィーン・メッセ」に行きました。私の役目は、「どのように経橈骨動脈カテ ーテルを行うか」というセッションの座長で、相方はイタリアのValsecchi 先生でした。演者 はブルガリアのDoganov先生とフランスのFajadet先生でした。セッションは8:30 AMから開 始でしたが、その前にどのように進行するかを話し合いました。

正直そんなにたくさんの聴衆は集まらないだろう、と予想していました。しかし、現実には 会場はほとんど満席となりました。会を10:00 AMまで行いました。

会の終了後、コーヒーを飲みながら1時間ぐらい過ごし、それからラーメン屋さん「ほのぼ の」に池野先生と行きました。そこでのみそラーメンはおいしかったです。ラーメン屋さんに行 く途中にはあの映画「第三の男」で使われた有名な観覧車が見えました。まだこの観覧車は動い ていました。

午後何の仕事もありませんでしたので、このヨーロッパ随一の歴史的街　ウィーンの観光に 行きました。「シェーンブルン宮殿」を訪れました。シェーンブルンというのは「美しい泉」と いう意味です。

ホテルに戻り数時間過ごしてから、夕食はウィーン料理レストランに行きました。そこではチターの生演奏が行われていました。そこで、 有名なウィーン料理である「子牛のシュニッツェル」と、お菓子「ザッハトルテ」を食べました。 とてもひどい時差ぼけでしたので早く部屋に戻りました。
