After taking shallow sleep, I waked up at 6:00 AM. Since my duty was scheduled in the evening, I decided to take short sightseeing in Athens from 9:00 AM. Since the economy in Athens was good after the Olympic Game, it was difficult to catch a taxi cab. After spending time, we finally caught a taxi. We rent the taxi for 3 hours by 75 Euros, which was about 12,000 Japanese Yen. First, I visited the Likavitos Hill. At the top of the Hill, there is a small Orthodox Church. We can see the beautiful scenery of the whole Athens from there. After that, by crossing in front of the Presidential Residence, we went to the old Olympic Stadium. It was lucky to see the change of the Guard for the Presidential Residence.

The final destination was the famous ruins Acropolis. It was very hot at and crowded by many tourists. After coming back to my hotel room and spending time, we had a lunch in a Crete cuisine restaurant near our hotel, after which I prepared for my lecture for the retrograde approach in angioplasty for CTO lesions in my room.

Taking a small chance

The meeting was held at the 2nd floor of the hotel. There were several live demonstrations from the hospitals within Greece. Everything was mainly made in Greek. There was English to Greek simultaneous translation but no reverse translation. After my presentation on the retrograde approach, there were several questioners from the audience. One of them told, “I tried the retrograde approach through the septal arteries in the 26 consecutive cases with CTO lesions, and I could successfully crossed in all of them. Thus, I believe that the retrograde approach is more feasible than the antegrade approach in CTO angioplasty. How do you think?” From my experiences, the success in crossing the guidewires through the septal channels was not complete. Thus, I could not believe in his opinion. Since the auditorium was dark, I could not identify him.

I was surprised to know the questioner was Dr. George Sianos. When I transmitted a case by doing the retrograde approach for the patient with a CTO lesion in the proximal RCA with previous 2 failed attempts during the live transmission in the EuroPCR meeting in 2006 from Thoraxcenter of the Erasmus University in Rotterdam, he was assisting me and learnt how to do the retrograde approach directly from me. Anybody tells that he is the most distinguished PCI operator in Thoraxcenter. He is a Greek. After attaining his carrier as a physician and medical researcher, he was spending his carrier for 10 years at Thoraxcenter. He told me that they had a European CTO club meeting in January 2007 and decided to collect all of the retrograde cases performed in Europe. Finally, they could collect 120 cases with the retrograde approach for CTO lesions and submitted those data to the Journal of American College of Cardiology (JACC). He told that it would be published. After I was informed that, I though that I might have no chance to public my article on retrograde approach, if I had have submitted it later than May 2007. Fortunately, I submitted my article on retrograde approach in May, and it was already accepted by the Catheterization and Cardiovascular Intervention. I could mark what I had done in the history of medical science. The world is running so fast. I realized that it is hard and difficult to keep running at the top line in the world. We must study and work hard.

It was nice to have a dinner with George in a nice Italian restaurant at the top floor at Hotel Grande Bretagne, which is located just near the Greek Parliament. We can see beautiful night scenery of Acropolis, which is lightened. We had a pleasant and interesting talk each other. We discussed about the Philosophy, Ethics or Sociology. It was a wonderful night.

A terrible trouble in the returning flight

I left the hotel after noon on September 29th Saturday 2007. My returning flight was the AF 1533 departing at 14:55 from Athens and arriving at 17:25 in Paris. The boarding was smooth on time. However, after the complete boarding, there was an announcement telling that the airplane had a machine trouble and it would take several hours to fix it. The airplane finally departed at 17:30 from Athens. I was supposed to be connected with a NH 206 flight departing at 20:00 for NARITA. It was already 30 minutes past 20:00 when I reached the Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport. Since the airline companies were different before and after Paris, Air France declared no responsibility and did nothing for me. There was one more flight, which was an Air France flight for NARITA departing at 11:30 PM on the same day. However, all of the flights between Paris and NARITA were quite busy. The flight was already fully booked. I had decided to stay at Airport Sheraton Hotel for 1 night and bought a new ticket of next morning Air France flight AF 272 departing at 11:45 AM on September 30th Sunday 2007. The price for the ticket was as expensive as almost 5,600 Euros. However, I had no other choice. It was my first time to miss the returning flight to Japan in my many experiences of foreign travels. At the Airport Lounge in Charles de Gaulle Airport in the morning of the 30th, I occasionally met Dr. SJ Park from Seoul. He was invited to European Bifurcation Club held in Valencia, Spain, and returning to Seoul. Finally, I arrived in NARITA Airport at 7:00 AM on October 1st Monday 2007. I hurried to my city Kamakura from NARITA Airport.

アテネ訪問

2007年9月27日木曜日11:35発のフランクフルト行きNH 209便で成田を飛び立ちました。 12時間の飛行の後、ルフトハンザ航空LH 5914便に乗り換えました。フランクフルトの天候は 悪く、全ての発着便が送れました。このため、ギリシャのアテネ空港に着いたのは翌日の1:00 AM であり、予定より3時間遅れでした。Diavini Caravelホテルの部屋に入ったのはもう2:00 AM でした。日本との時差は夏時間で6時間なので、もう日本時刻の8:00 AMでしたので、家を出 てからかれこれ25時間以上経過したことになります。私は第4回AICT学会 (Athens Interventional Cardiovascular Therapeutics)より招聘されました。

浅い睡眠を取り、6:00 AMには目が醒めました。私の仕事は午後でしたので、9:00 AMか ら短い観光に出かけました。オリンピックの後もアテネの景気は良く、タクシーを捕まえるのは 大変でした。何とか、一台のタクシーを見つけ、3時間75ユーロ(12,000円ぐらい)での貸切を 決めました。最初にLikavitosの丘に行きました。丘の頂上にはギリシャ正教教会があり、そこ からは美しいアテネ市街の景色が一望できます。その後、大統領官邸の前を通り、昔のオリンピ ック・スタジアムに行きました。丁度、大統領官邸前では衛兵の交代式を行っていました。

最後に有名なアクロポリス遺跡に行きました。たくさんの旅行者で混んでおり、またとても 暑かったです。ホテルの部屋に戻ってから、少し休み、近くのクレタ料理レストランで昼食を摂 りました。それから、部屋で講演の準備をしました。

危ない所

学会はホテルの二階で開かれていました。ギリシャの幾つかの病院からのライブもありまし た。ただ、全てが主としてギリシャ語で行われ、英語からギリシャ語への同時通訳はついている のですが、逆はありませんでした。逆行性アプローチについて講演しましたが、会場からいつく つかの質問がありました。その中の一人が、「私は連続26例のCTO症例に対して、中隔枝経由 の逆行性アプローチを行い、その全例で成功しているので、逆行性の方が順行性よりも可能性が ある、と思うがどう思うか?」と聞いてきました。私の経験では、全例でうまくいくとは到底信 じられないものでした。会場が暗かったので、その質問者が誰か分かりませんでした。

その質問者がGeorge Sianos先生であったと知り、驚きました。私が2006年のEuroPCR でロッテルダムのエラスムス大学ThoraxcenterからCTOに対する逆行性アプローチのライブ を中継した時に、彼が助手をしました。彼はその時に、私から直接、逆行性アプローチのやり方 を学びました。彼がThoraxcenterでピカイチの術者であることは誰しも認める所です。彼はも ともとギリシャ人であり、ギリシャで医者と研究者としての業績を重ねた後、オランダに渡り、 Thoraxcenterで10年間の業績があります。彼の話によれば、2007年1月にEuropean CTO club というのが開催され、そこで、逆行性アプローチ症例のヨーロッパ・データを集めようという話 になったそうです。そして、その120例の成果がJACC誌に投稿され、出版されるということ です。これを聞いて私が思ったのは、もしも私の論文投稿があと少し遅かったら、もうチャンス は無かったな、ということです。幸運にも私は、2007年5月に逆行性アプローチの論文を投稿 しました。そして、それはCCI誌に既に受理されました。私は、医学の歴史に一歩、足跡を残 すことができました。世界は早く動いています。世界の第一線で走ることを維持するのがいかに 大変なことか改めて認識しました。もっと、一生懸命研究し働かねばなりません。

GeorgeとGrande Bretagneホテル屋上のイタリア料理レストランですばらしい夕食を摂り ました。ここはギリシャ議会のすぐそばにあります。そこからは、ライトで照らされた美しい Acropolisの夜景が見えます。我々は、とても楽しくまた興味深い話をしました。哲学、倫理あ るいは社会学について議論しました。とても素晴らしい夜でした。

帰りの飛行機でのトラブル

ホテルを2007年9月29日土曜日の昼過ぎに出て、空港に向かいました。アテネ発14:55　 パリ着17:25着のAF 1533便でした。搭乗は定刻どおりでしたが、その後に、メカ・トラプル が起こり、出発は遅れました。最終的に飛び立ったのは既に17:30でした。もとより、20:00パ リ発のNH 206便に乗る予定でしたが、パリに着いたのは既に20:30でした。この後、もう一 便11:30発のAF便がありましたが、あいにくパリ-成田間の便は全て満席でした。ようやく、 翌朝の便が一席のみあいており、それを買いました。値段は何と、5,600ユーロもしましたが、 何しろ他に選択の余地はありませんでした。その夜は空港シェラトン・ホテルに宿泊しました。 翌朝、空港ラウンジでソウルのSJ Park先生と偶然お会いしました。彼は、European Bifurcation Clubに招かれ、スペインのバレンシアからソウルに帰る所でした。結局、成田に到着したのは 2007年10月1日月曜日7:00 AMでした。急いで鎌倉に戻りました。
