Kick-Off Meeting for DES Trial

I left Narita Airport at 20:05 on January 15th Thursday 2009 by JL 771 flight for Sydney, Australia. After flying for 9 hours and 30 minutes, I arrived at Sydney International Airport around 7:30 AM. There was 2 hours time difference between Japan and Australia. I came to Sydney to attend the Kick-Off meeting for the worldwide new DES trial.

I had been working hard to introduce new medical devices like new DES into Japanese patients. There are many differences in the regulations or genetic responses among nations. Thus, it is not so easy to introduce such complicated medical devices as DES, which is the combination of medical device itself and drug. For the past several years, Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare (MHLW), Japanese Pharmaceutical and Medical Devices Agency (PMDA), United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Japanese Academia, US Academia and clinicians have worked hard in order to overcome these barriers for the introduction of new medical devices. We call this activity as “Harmonization By Doing: HBD”.

This time, a global company planned to start a clinical trial for a new DES simultaneously in the world including Japan. It is very exciting for me. At last, we can join the worldwide most advanced clinical trial from the beginning. I went to the Hotel Intercontinental Sydney. After I checked in the hotel and took shower, the meeting started form 10:00 AM. There were almost 200 physicians and clinical research coordinators from Japan, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand and other countries joining the meeting. We had a lot of fruitful discussions. The meeting finally ended at 17:00.

Because I had to take the returning flight on the night, I had short sightseeing around the Sydney port and seafood dinner. Flying by the overnight flight for Narita, I arrived at 6:15 AM on January 17th Saturday 2009. I was the person on the day who arrived in Japan at Narita International Airport. Thus, I stayed in Australia only for 14 hours. However, this extremely short trip was wonderful for me.

薬剤溶出性ステント試験のキックオフ

2009年1月15日木曜日20:05発のJL 771便で成田空港からオーストラリアのシドニー に向かいました。9時間30分の飛行の後、シドニー国際空港到着は7:30 AMでした。日本 とオーストラリアの間には2時間の時差があります。私は、新しい薬剤溶出性ステントに関 する世界規模の試験に向けてのキックオフのためにこのシドニーに入りました。

私はこれまで日本の患者さんに新しい薬剤溶出性ステントを導入するためにたくさん 働いてきました。世界の国々には法律の違いや、遺伝的な違いが存在します。従いまして、 DESのように医療器具と薬剤が複合したものを導入するということは、そう簡単なことで はありません。過去数年間、日本の厚労省、独立行政法人　医薬品医療機器総合機構、アメ リカの食品医薬品局、日本やアメリカの研究機関、そして臨床医はこの障壁を乗り越えて医 療器具を導入するべく働いてきました。私たちはこの活動を「行動による調和: HBD」と呼 んでいます。

今回、ある世界的企業が新しい薬剤溶出性ステントの治験を日本も含めて世界同時に行 うことを企画しました。これは私にとって、とても刺激的なことです。ついにわれわれが最 先端の世界的臨床試験に最初から参加することができるのです。シドニー・インターコンチ ネンタル・ホテルに向い、チェック・インしてシャワーを浴びました。会は10:00 AMから 始まりました。会場には日本、オーストラリア、マレーシア、タイ、その他の国々から医師 やCRCが200名は参加していました。とても有意義な議論をすることができました。会は 17:00に終了しました。

私はその夜の便で戻らねばなりませんでした。シドニー港周辺で少し観光をしてから、 夕食をとりました。成田に向かう夜行便で戻り、成田空港には2009年1月17日土曜日6:15 AMに到着しました。私が、その日成田空港から日本入国した最初の人でした。今回のオー ストラリア滞在時間はたった14時間でしたが、このとても短い旅行はとってもすばらしい ものでした。
