Big changes in Beijing

Flying on NH 5707 flight, I left for Beijing from Narita Airport on March 18th Wednesday 2009. The flight was run by China Airline (Code-Share Flight), and the airplane was old. I arrived in Beijing later than 10:00 PM. The hotel was Crowne Plaza Park View Wuzhou Beijing Hotel. The word “Crowne” is the correct spelling for the hotel. It is definitely different from the English word “Crown”. I do not understand the reason for that.

As one of the course co-directors for China Interventional Therapeutics (CIT), I came to Beijing. CIT was initiated by Professor Runlin Gao at FuWai National Cardiovascular Center in 2003. Thus, CIT 2009 was the 7th meeting. This year, we had a serious problem. The biggest scientific meeting in the field of Cardiology in Japan is the annual meeting of the Japanese Circulation Society. It was held between March 20th and 22nd in Osaka. Thus, a part of the schedules for both meetings were conflicting.

March 19h Thursday 2009

The opening ceremony for the exhibition of CIT meeting was held from 9:00 AM at the exhibition hall of the China International Convention Center. I was asked to join it. There were Dr. Gao, Dr. Jeffry Moses from Columbia University, New York and I. We cut the ceremony tape together.

After the ceremony, I received an interview from CIT Press. I cut my hair very shortly first time 9 years ago in Beijing. There is one nice barber shop in the International Club in Beijing. I am very familiar with that shop. I visited the barber shop again and cut my hair.

After having quick lunch, I hurried to FuWai Hospital to do live case transmissions to CIT meeting. This year, I was doing PCI during the TRI Session. I transmitted 2 left main cases. Dr. Kiemeneij was also one of the operators. I talked many things with him while waiting for my turn.

After finishing my live cases, I returned to the Convention Center to attend the Opening Ceremony for CIT 2009 as one of the co-directors. Dr. SJ Park was also there.

I delivered a welcome address, which was modified from that of the previous year. I changed the content according to the worldwide situation. I talked about the significance of the economical crisis. The content of the speech was as follows.

Ladies and Gentlemen!

On behalf of the organizing committee of China Interventional Therapeutics 2009 and 
Japanese Interventional Cardiologists, here I would like to welcome all of you to this fantastic 
live demonstration course and scientific symposium.
Last year in 2008, we opened this CIT meeting with the excitement for the 1st Olympic Game 
held in China. China completed such a big ceremony as Olympic Game with tremendous 
success. At that time, nobody could imagine that we would have such terrible economic crisis 
as we are now facing.
During the last several weeks, I was travelling in the west and east coasts of the United States. 
I was so surprised to see how the financial crises attacked the real economy in US. It is now 
encroaching on the health care system as well. In this situation, China is very strong. Because 
of this strength, I am very glad and happy to have the opportunity to meet with many 
distinguished friends in Interventional Cardiology around the world here in Beijing. During 
this meeting and through the frank mutual communication among the different people with 
different thinking, different food, different religion, different culture, different birth place or 
different living place, we are sure to create something new ideas. I believe these new ideas 
will overcome any difficulty, which we are now facing.
Thus, I can tell you. Now we are standing here in the opening ceremony of CIT 2009, and we 
are now changing the world as well. I will stop talking about serious matter anymore. I change 
my mind also. Thus, I tell the following briefly. 
Again, I would like to welcome all of you to CIT 2009! Enjoy your pleasant and fruitful stay in 
my second home town Beijing! Thank you very much.

I cancelled the official dinner and went to one of my favorite restaurants in Beijing, “WanLongZhou”. I have been there so many times. It used to be a nice, good taste, good service and not expensive live seafood restaurant. That was my first time to visit there after Beijing Olympic Game 2008. I was deeply disappointed for the bad taste and bad service. I will never visit there anymore. I am seriously afraid that Beijing Olympic Game had destroyed the good traditional mentality of Chinese general people.

March 20th Friday 2009

I visited Japan-China Friendship Hospital before 9:00 AM. It was my first time to visit there. This hospital was built with the support from Japanese Government. It is a big hospital. I treated one patient. He had a CTO lesion in the middle RCA. Several weeks ago, Dr. Yong WAN tried to open the lesion. He could successfully pass a Conquest-Pro guidewire through the occlusion. However, he could not cross any balloons. I did the case from the right radial approach and crossed the lesion by using a Conquest-Pro guidewire. Then, I took Tornus device, and placed drug-eluting stents.

I had late breakfast in a fast food restaurant, “YongHe DaWang”, where we can take soymilk, fried bread, dumpling and so on. It was originally from Taiwan. The taste there was much better than in WangLongZhou.

I returned to the hotel and checked out. After delivering a key note lecture on TRI in the Convention Center, I moved to the Airport and flew to Osaka by NH 5742 flight, which reached Kansai International Airport around 20:00. Next day, I joined the Japanese Circulation Society meeting as one of the chairmen.

北京の大きな変化

2009年3月18日水曜日にNH 5707便で成田から北京に向かいました。この便はChina Airlineとのコード・シェア便でした。飛行機は古いものでした。北京到着は10:00 PMを回 っていました。ホテルは北京五州Crowne Plazaでした。Crowneというこのホテルの単語は ミススペルではありません。英語のCrownとは違うのです。どうしてその単語を使うのか 理由が分かりません。

China Interventional Therapeutics (CIT)のCourse Co-Directorの一人として北京に来ま した。CITは阜外国立循環器病センターのGao先生によって2003年に第一回が開催されま した。ですから、今年は第七回ということになります。今年は、困った問題がありました。 それは、日本国内の循環器領域最大の学会である、日本循環器学会総会が、大阪で3月20 日から22日まで開催されるといことです。ですから、この二つの学会が重なる、というこ とです。

中国国際会議場の展示ホールで9:00 AMからCITの医療器具展示会開会式が開催されま した。私も参加されるように言われました。Gao先生、ニューヨーク・コロンビア大学の Jeffry Moses先生と私が参加しました。私は皆と一緒にテープ・カットをしました。

この式典の後、CIT Pressからインタビューを受けました。私はこの北京で9年前に初 めて髪を短く刈りました。北京国際クラブの中にとても良い理髪店があります。そこは馴染 みで、今回も髪を刈りにそこに行きました。

ランチを短く済ませ、CITでのライブを行うために、阜外病院に行きました。今年私は、 TRI Sessionでライブを二例行うことになっていました。二例とも左主幹部の症例でした。 Kiemeneij先生も一例やられました。症例を待っている間、Kiemeneij先生と色々話しまし た。

症例を終えてから、国際会議場に戻りました。CIT 2009の開会式が開催されるからです。 そこで、SJ Park先生とお会いしました。

私は去年のスピーチ内容を少し変更したものをスピーチしました。世界の状況が去年と は異なるからです。世界経済危機について触れました。その内容は以下のようなものです。

開会式の後の晩餐会には出席せず、北京で馴染みの店「万龍州」に行きました。　この 店は何回も訪れています。とても良く、美味しく、サービスも良く、しかも値段もとても安 い新鮮な海鮮料理屋でした。でも2008年北京オリンピックの後に訪れたのはこれが最初で した。とってもがっかりしました。味は落ち、サービスも最悪でした。もう二度と行きたく ありません。北京オリンピックで、中国の人々の伝統的な良い心がすっかり壊されてしまっ たのではないかと、とても心配しています。

9:00 AM前に日中友好病院に行きました。この病院に行くのはこれが初めてでした。こ の病院は日本政府の援助によって建設されました。とても大きな病院です。そこで患者さん を一人治療しました。病変は右冠動脈なかほどの慢性完全閉塞でした。数週間前に、王　勇 先生がこの病変の治療を試みました。Conquest-Proで通過したものの、どんなバルーンも 通過できなかったのです。右TRIで入り、Conquest-Proで通過し、その後Tornusで拡げ、 DESを植え込みました。

今度は「永和大王」というfast foodの店で朝食を摂りました。そこでは、豆乳、揚げパ ン、小龍包などを食べました。もともと台湾から来たチェーン店ですが、味は「万龍州」よ りもよほど良かったです。

ホテルに戻り、チェック・アウトしました。学会場でTRIについてのKeynote講演を行 ってから、空港に向かい、NH 5742便で大阪に飛びました。関西空港に着いたのは20:00過 ぎでした。翌日は日本循環器学会総会に座長として参加しました。
