Almost Arrested!

Changing the flight at Mumbai, I finally arrived at Ahmedabad International Airport at 11:00 AM on October 5 Tuesday, 2004. This was my 5th time visit at this city. While walking from the airplane to the terminal building, I took photography of the airplane by using my digital camera. An airline company person soon came to me and told, “It is not allowed to take photography in the airport. You have to delete it.” I deleted the photo. Then, a soldier of Indian Army came to me. He took me to the Indian Army office within the terminal building. They checked my camera and ordered me to confirm that the photos taken in the airport were completely deleted. They were very friendly but also strict. Thus, I was almost arrested by Indian Army. I knew later that it was strictly prohibited in India due to the military reasons to take photography of the airport, bridges, stations, army bases, etc.
After released from the soldiers, I checked in the hotel “Taj Residency Ummed”, where I stay every time in Ahmedabad. I asked a high-speed Internet connection, and checked e-mails.

Dr. Tejas Patel and his team moved to a new hospital from Krishna Heart Institute from August this year. The name of the new hospital is “Sterling Hospital”, which is run by a company named “Add Life Medical Institute, Ltd”. Krishna Heart Institute is build far from downtown Ahmedabad in the field. However, this new hospital is just at the center of the downtown. The new hospital is not far and 10 minutesﾕ distance by car from the hotel, although it took almost 30 minutes to Krishna Heart Institute.
I arrived at the hospital around 1:00 PM. All in the Cardiology department welcomed me. A board to announce my visiting was displayed in the entrance. We know each other for almost 3 years. The hospital has 2 laboratories: one is the newest Siemensﾕ flat-panel machine, and another is the old Philipsﾕ H-3000. Since these 2 laboratories are located just side by side, it is very convenient to do procedures. I could do 5 cases of TRI within 1 and half hours.
Tejas and his team are doing very nice jobs to expand the transradial intervention in India. I could see a very interesting advertisement signboard in the street, which was displaying “Walk-in, Walk-out Angiography”. For these 5 cases, I used neither new guidewires nor new guiding catheters.

We had a late lunch from 3:00 PM in the conference room at the 8th floor. They prepared the especially spicy food for me.

The president of the hospital is very ambitious for the development of Cardiology section. Next to the catheterization laboratories, ICU is built. The very interesting one is “Radial Lounge”. Patients can have relaxation there after having transradial angiography and/or intervention. Patients come to the hospital, undergo transradial coronary intervention, relax in the “Radial Lounge” for several hours, and then come back to home in the evening of the same day. I was very much jealous for these environments.

The president of the hospital prepared the nice dinner party in his wide farm. He is a businessman and very rich. The party started from 8:00 oﾕclock in the evening. Nearly 20 nice horses are fed in this farm. One of them is the national champion horse in India. There were 2 old coaches displayed. They were built 100 years ago during the British rule. The president is very kind. The food was very nice. We ate and drank spirits, which were prohibited in pious state, Gujarat, here. I talked much with my friend, Tejas how to expand the movement of TRI in the world.

もう少しで拘束されるところ!

ムンバイで飛行機を乗り継いでアーマダバード国際空港に着いたのは2004年10月5日の午前11時でした。今回が5回目となるアーマダバードです。飛行機から空港ビルまで歩く間に乗ってきた飛行機の写真をデジカメで撮りました。すぐに職員が私のところに来て、「空港で写真を撮影することは禁止されている。消しなさい。」と言われました。私は写真を消去しました。それからインド陸軍の兵士が来ました。私は空港ビル内にある陸軍事務所に連れていかれました。そして、兵士達は私のカメラをチェックし、空港内で撮影した写真が完全に消去されているか確認するように命じました。彼らはとても優しかったですが、同時に厳格でした。かくして私はインド陸軍にもう少しで捕らえられるところでした。後で知ったのですが、インドでは軍事的理由により、空港、橋、駅、基地などを写真撮影することは禁止されているのです。
兵士達から開放されてから、アーマダバードで何時も宿泊するTajホテルにチェック・インしました。高速インターネット接続を頼み、メールをチェックしました。

Tejas Patel先生とそのチームはKrishna心臓病院からこの8月に新しい病院に移りました。この新しい病院の名前はスターリング病院と言い、“Add Life Medical Institute, Ltd”という会社によって運営されています。Krishnaはアーマダバード中心部から遠く離れた原野の中に建てられていましたが、この新しい病院は市内中心部にあります。Krishnaにホテルから行くには車で30分かかりましたが、この新しい病院には10分で着けます。
病院に着いたのは午後1時頃でした。循環器の皆が迎えてくれました。入り口には私を歓迎する看板が出ていました。お互いにもう三年間も馴染みの顔ぶれです。この病院にはカテ室が二つありました。ひとつは最新型のシーメンス社製のフラット・パネル装置で、もう一つは古いフィリップス社製のH-3000でした。これら二つのカテ室は隣り合っているので、手技を行うにはとても便利で、1時間半の間に5例のTRIを行うことができました。

8階のフロアーにあるカンファレンス・ルームで午後3時から遅いランチを食べました。私のために飛び切り辛い食事を用意していました。

病院の社長はとても積極的で、循環器部門を充実させようとしています。カテ室の隣にはICUがあります。面白かったのは、“Radial Lounge”というのを設けていることです。患者さんは橈骨動脈からの造影、あるいはPCIを受けた後ここで数時間リラックスして、それからその日の夕方には自宅に帰る、というものです。この環境がとても羨ましく思えました。

この日の夜、病院の社長は彼の広い農園での夕食パーティーを開催してくれました。彼はビジネスマンであり、とても金持ちです。パーティーは午後8時から始まりました。この農園には20頭ぐらいのとても良い馬がいます。その中の一頭はインド国内のチャンピオンに輝いた馬です。古い馬車もありました。これらはイギリス統治下の100年前に作られたものだそうです。社長はとても親切でした。食事もとてもおいしいものでした。グジャラート州では禁止されているお酒も飲みました。友人のPatel先生とどのようにTRIを世界に広げていくか、についてたくさん話をしました。
